Oborevwori resolves DESUTH industrial crisis, orders urgent fix of power, infrastructure challenges

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has resolved the industrial crisis at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DESUTH), Oghara, and directed immediate measures to tackle the institution’s lingering power and infrastructural challenges.

The Chief Medical Director of DESUTH, Prof. Harrison Abedi, disclosed this on Monday in Asaba while speaking with journalists shortly after a meeting with Governor Oborevwori.

Prof. Abedi said the governor personally intervened in the dispute that led to workers’ unrest at the state’s premier teaching hospital, successfully resolving the issues and restoring confidence among management and staff.

According to him, the governor convened a meeting with the hospital’s management to address the concerns that triggered the industrial action and also used the opportunity to tackle longstanding operational challenges facing the institution.

He revealed that one of the major issues discussed was the prolonged power outage that has disrupted hospital activities and water supply for about two weeks.

“The governor personally invited the hospital’s management for discussions and successfully resolved the issues that led to the workers’ unrest at the state’s premier teaching hospital,” Abedi said.

The Chief Medical Director further disclosed that the state government had already awarded a contract aimed at restoring stable electricity supply to the hospital, adding that implementation had commenced through the Ministry of Energy.

According to him, management was informed during the meeting that a new high-tension transformer had been procured and was being transported from Lagos for installation.

He explained that the transformer would provide DESUTH with a dedicated 33KVA power line, a development expected to permanently address the hospital’s electricity challenges.

“The governor has assured us that the power problem will soon become a thing of the past. We are grateful that the Ministry of Energy has swung into action, and we expect the transformer to arrive very soon,” he stated.

Beyond resolving the power crisis, Abedi said Governor Oborevwori had directed him to work closely with the Commissioner for Health to facilitate the comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization of the teaching hospital.

He noted that the planned upgrade would address ageing infrastructure and significantly improve healthcare delivery at the institution.

The CMD expressed optimism that the governor’s intervention would persuade the striking unions to suspend their industrial action and resume work in the interest of patients and the public.

“We believe the unions will reconsider their position, and we are hopeful that the strike will be called off soon. Once that happens, normal services will resume immediately, and DELSUTH will return to full operation,” he said.

Prof. Abedi commended Governor Oborevwori for what he described as a demonstration of responsive and people-centred leadership, noting that the intervention underscored the administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services across Delta State.
