2027: Sowore secures AAC presidential ticket, steps down as national chairman

ABUJA — The African Action Congress (AAC) has announced the resignation of Omoyele Sowore as the party’s National Chairman, a dramatic leadership shake-up that comes just hours after the human rights activist was confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The party disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday, shortly after Sowore secured the AAC ticket through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders during primaries held in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the statement, Samuel Ajeigbe has been appointed as the new National Chairman of the party.

“Omoyole Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress. The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement read.

The resignation marks a major leadership transition within the AAC as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections. Sowore, who previously ran for president in 2019 and 2023, will now focus solely on his presidential bid while Ajeigbe takes over the party’s administrative helm.

Sowore was presented with the party’s flag amid cheers from supporters and delegates from various states across the country. Speaking after accepting the nomination, he said the AAC was founded to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance.

He commended party members for remaining committed despite political pressure and the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

The activist-turned-politician also launched a blistering attack on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of incompetence and attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.

Dismissing claims that over 10 million APC members participated in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential primary, Sowore said: “There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members. I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members.”

With Sowore now fully pivoting to the presidential race and Ajeigbe taking over party leadership, the AAC appears to be streamlining its structure for what promises to be an intense 2027 election cycle.

Political observers will be watching to see whether the party can translate Sowore’s activist energy and online following into tangible electoral gains against the established political machinery of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

As of press time, Sowore had not issued an additional personal statement regarding his resignation as chairman, but the timing suggests a strategic decision to separate party administration from campaign leadership ahead of the polls.
