Police Commissioner calls for accountability, strategic communication to reposition Nigeria

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP John Yemi Oyeniyi, has stressed the need for accountable leadership, transparent governance and professional communication as critical pillars for Nigeria’s sustainable development and national repositioning.

Speaking at the 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) Public Lecture of the Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the police commissioner, represented at the event, said effective leadership goes beyond the exercise of authority and must be anchored on responsibility, transparency and public trust.

Addressing participants at the lecture themed, “Leadership, Accountability and Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Strategic Intersection of Public Relations for National Repositioning,” Oyeniyi noted that public relations remains a vital bridge between institutions and citizens, helping to foster understanding, confidence and cooperation necessary for national progress.

He commended the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations for its sustained commitment to professionalism, ethical communication and nation-building, describing the institute as a key stakeholder in promoting responsible governance and public engagement.

The police commissioner emphasized that strategic communication has become indispensable in modern policing, noting that the Nigeria Police Force increasingly recognizes the importance of effective public relations in strengthening public confidence and enhancing security operations.

He cited the contributions of notable Police Public Relations Officers, including Deputy Inspector General Frank Mba, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel C.S. Ojukwu and Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, whose accomplishments, he said, underscore the strong relationship between policing and professional public relations practice.

Oyeniyi urged stakeholders across sectors to champion accountability, professionalism and collaboration in their respective fields, stressing that collective efforts are needed to drive sustainable development and restore public confidence in national institutions.

“Together, we can contribute meaningfully to the repositioning and sustainable development of our nation,” he stated.

He also wished the institute a successful AGM and commended its contributions to advancing the public relations profession and supporting national development.
